Who?

Who are they...

A family affair

Akamuti is a family-run natural skincare company which was started from Lindsay Anne Hedge’s kitchen. Since then, the business grown and Lindsey’s family has become the Akamuti team. Lindsey’s late dad Stephen, mum Anita, sisters Jennifer and Karis, brother Daniel, family friends and many more have been involved along the way, creating products by hand and shipping them around the world to their customers.

To this day, they remain a small, tight-knit team of people. They shared passion for nature, therapy and natural beauty burns brighter than ever and they couldn’t be more proud of their team and artisan products.

Why?

Akamuti was born from Lindsey’s dream to be her own boss and make healing products that had a positive impact on people and the planet.

How?

How it started...

For the love of plants

The beginnings of Akamuti started way back when Lindsey was just a teenager.

Lindsey’s mum and dad moved the family from the North West of England to a tiny cottage nestled in a beautiful, wild woodland in Pembrokeshire, in search of the ‘good life’. Lindsey fell in love with her wild riverside garden and the hundreds of plants she found growing there. With her curiosity ignited, Lindsey set out to identify each and every one of those plants and in so doing, discovered a fascinating world of plant history, stories, folklore and medicine. It was there that a lifelong passion for nature and a love of plants and trees was sparked.

From this point, there was no looking back and Lindsey went on to learn about herbal medicine, aromatherapy and eventually qualified as an aromatherapist. Lindsey’s first herbal discovery was a big patch of comfrey growing by the river. Lindsey set about making her own magical comfrey oil and it wasn’t long before the tiny cottage kitchen was overrun with beeswax, jars and oils...

And so, the very first Akamuti product was created.

 What & When?

What’s in a name

Out of Africa

Akamuti is an African word from the Bemba language of Zambia, very close to Lindsey’s mum’s place of birth. Akamuti means “little tree” or a “little bit of medicine” and summarised the very ethos of the business, beautifully. Africa’s energy and influence has remained a powerful force in Lindsey’s family, from the very moment Lindsey’s grandparents arrived on Africa’s shores by ship, nearly a hundred years ago.

Lindsey started Akamuti in 2003 with just six products. Since then, the range has grown to well over a hundred! African shea butter and black soap are at the very heart of their product range and it is Lindsey’s passion to share these wonderful products with all her customers.

Whether it be seaweed from Pembrokeshire, peppermint oil from India, coconut oil from the Philippines or baobab oil from Kenya, Lindsey continues to source products from around the World and share plant wisdom and healing from their global garden. It’s what makes the Akamuti world go round.

Looking Forward to the Future

The botanical journey continues...

Akamuti is 22 years old this year! From humble beginnings, Akamuti has weathered the storm. In 2022, after many years of mainly exporting to Europe, they decided to try a pop-up retail shop. This evolved into opening their first flagship store on the beautiful Milford Haven Marina. It has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase their products and meet their customers in person.

Akamuti’s passion is to continue creating the finest skincare using the very best ingredients from around the world. Their quest for healing botanicals continues! With a global market now within reach, Akamuti products are now sold in more countries than ever before. The demand for natural, honest skincare is certainly growing and they hope it continues.
